Halloween Horror - OCN 3 - Swan 6

You know that scene in the exorcist from the extended cut... yeah this one.

That's kind of how things went tonight for the Blizzard.

When Gray, Valiquette, and Cardinal were on the ice the Blizzard controlled the play.

The fourth line played a solid game as well with extended periods of pressure deep in the Swan zone.

Petrino played well again, dazzling hands and quick release on the Blizzard's first goal. That Baptiste trade looks pretty sweet right now.

Elmes, Cochrane and Bruyere had solid night on defense.

I think the rest of the team was too busy riding along on the exorcists body down those stairs.

Too many passengers tonight.

The Blizz D gave up too many odd man rushes, and two breakaways they were lucky that Henry was there for those.

Henry didn't have his strongest game of the season either, but it happens. He's a good goalie none the less.

On the other side the Stampeders did a good job of staying out of the box and taking advantage on the power play.

Two goals from the point on the PP - that's how it happens.

The Stampeders got under OCN's skin and that's become the scouting report, it's too easy to goad the Blizzard into taking useless penalties.

Wilson Dumais spent more time in the box than he did on the ice.

Although there were a few questionable calls, like TJ Constants so called hit to the head, that was pure shoulder to chest, same on Wilson Dumais hit that they called late. He finished his check, plain and simple.

TJ looks a little slow out there, it will take him a few more games to get back into game shape.

Landon Noel looked better tonight I thought. Still not unbeatable but the Blizzard just couldn't get to his rebounds. Swan did a good job of boxing out the Blizzard garbage hunters and got to the puck first.

The Blizzard controlled the play for the first two periods. It was a great hockey game through 40 minutes, probably the best 2 periods of hockey I've seen all season.

The third was a different story. Things just sort of fell apart.

The Blizzard set the tone right from puck drop with Fontaine tapping Valentino's shins at jawing him at the opening draw, he then went and knocked Riley Hiebert out of the game with a clean hit behind the Swan goal.

Parker Sharp nailed Sam Briscoe a few minutes later simultaneously giving him a whack in the knee which sent him off for the rest of the game.

The Blizzard had a tremendous physical presence in the first and controlled the play, then the penalties started and it all went down hill.

OCN's top guys like TJ Constant, and Wilson Dumais can't be spending 10 minutes in the box each per game. Just kills the team.

The loss of Grove for the past two games has hurt the penalty kill, as has the loss of Santorelli and Thomas Ward-Cardinal.

I spoke with Clay DeBray after the game, here are his thoughts...

Hope you all had a safe halloween, should there be any candy you don't want feel free to drop it off at the radio station on 3rd street!

Wayne Hawrysh takes a familiar spot behind the bench again tonight filling in as Mollard serves his suspension. Wayne tells me this is his 38th year involved with the MJHL. Hawrysh started with the Dauphin Kings in the 70's.

Jebb Takes Over as Storm's Interim GM

The intricate web of position changes with the OCN Storm continues.

Last week both Gatlin Church and Mike Jebb resigned from their respective positions of GM and team President.

As of this week Mike Jebb has returned to the club in the capacity of the teams General Manager in an interim role as the board seeks a new general manger.

Church is still no longer with the club.

The Storm are 0-9 in their inaugural season and begin 4 games in 4 nights tomorrow in Norway House.

Game Day Preview: Blizzard vs Swan Valley

Round 4 of 8.

The first two rounds scored 5-3, 3-0 in OCN's favour, the third the Stampeders jumped out hard from their corner to score a 6-3.

Round 4 goes tonight at the GLMC and the Blizzard will have the advantage of playing at home.

The last time these two teams met was on Saturday, Swan won 6-3 at home in a chippy, sloppy hockey game.

Neither team played exceptionally well, many turnovers, broken plays etc...

TJ Constant and Colton Magwood fought off the opening draws. Two other fights took place in that game.

Blizzard players and staff felt Magwood was taking runs at OCN's players and was unwilling to answer the Blizzard players challenge to a fight after his original tilt as he had his wrist wrapped up.

The Blizzard are going to look to set the tone and avenge what they felt happened in Swan last weekend right from the opening faceoff.

Tonight should be a very entertaining affair. For OCN they need to take care of things in the first minute or two of the game then get back to their skating and skilled game, that's how they win.

All the Blizzard players who were suspended for Saturday's game in Swan are allowed to play tonight, that means Lathlin, Kavanaugh, Cameron and Brady Constant are eligible.

How They Matchup:

Record:

OCN: 12-4-1 / 25pts
SWAN: 8-5-1 / 17pts

Goals For:

OCN: 57
SWAN: 52

Goals Against:

OCN: 42
SWAN: 50

Goal Differential:

OCN:  +15
SWAN: +2

Power Play:

OCN:  6/67 - 8.96% (11th)
SWAN: 11/67 - 16.42% (8th)

Penalty Kill:

OCN: 85/98 - 86.73% (1st)
SWAN: 73/82 - 85.48% (3rd)

Top Scorer:

OCN: Tyler Grove (6G, 10A, 17GP)
SWAN: Dylan Reimer (9G, 8A, 14GP)

The Stampeders have a new/old face with the team. TJ Fairall has returned to the club and played his first game last night with the Stamps, Fairall was held off the score sheet. Fairall will add some punch to the Stamps offense as he scored 29 goals and added 23 assists in 62 games last season with Swan Valley.

Injury Update:

Tyler Grove (Hip Injury - Day- to- day) - Out for tonight's game as his hip is still tender, expected to return to the lineup Friday vs Portage.

Taylor Santorelli (Fractured Rib - 6-8 weeks) - It was originally thought that Santorelli would be day to day with a back injury, but after continued pain and no progression Santorellis was sent for x-rays where it was discovered he's actually fractured the highest rib on his rib cage just under the clavicle. He is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

Thomas Ward-Cardinal (High Ankle Sprain - Day-to-day) Out for tonight's game, but began riding the bike last week and will begin practicing tomorrow. Should be ready to return to action sometime next week. At this point the injury can't get any worse, all depends on Ward-Cardinals pain tolerance.

Puck drop is at 7PM. Game will NOT be broadcast tonight. Our next broadcast is Saturday as Neepawa rolls into town.

Sport Report Audio Week 5

I'm trying out a new audio hosting website as soundcloud only lets you store an hours worth of audio until you have to pay for it.

So here is the sport report in all four segments.

Mollard Suspended Five (5) Games

It was expected.

Jim Mollard out for the next five games. Here is the release from the MJHL:

OCN Blizzard's head coach, Jim Mollard received two (2) games for receiving a Gross Misconduct penalty and received three (3) games for receiving a Match penalty.  Both incidents above occurred during the game on October 27, 2012 versus the Swan Valley Stampeders.

What Happened?

From my view in the broadcast perch this is what I saw. Majority of the Mollard's explosion is the result of Magwood running Blizzard players but not willing to fight after his tussle with TJ (according to one of the Blizz players the asked him to fight later in the game but showed them a bandaged up hand and he said he was unwilling).

That seemed to have gotten under Mollards skin, also the fact that the Blizzard didn't respond by doing the same.

A few terrible calls here and there and Mollard blew up, yelled at Kirkup, yelled at the ref when he tried to calm him down then threw his glove on the ice when he got ejected.

I think a 5 game suspension is harsh, considering that's one less than half of what Marlin Murray got for throwing and hitting a ref javelin style with a stick. In essence assaulting a referee.

Stampeders 6 - Blizzard 3

A fight 11 seconds into the game between captain TJ Constant and Colton Magwood set the tone for the rest of the game.

It went in Swan's favour.

The Blizzard let Magwood run their best players and didn't return the favour, yes Dusik and Gray both fought but it wasn't beating up their top guys like Swan did last night.

The game had a great pace for the first ten minutes when it was a skating game and the Blizzard controlled the play.

But when Magwood got out of the box and started taking runs, the game slowed down, became choppy and  both teams were turning the puck over consistently.

It was a very slow game.

Justin McDonald played okay, not the spectacular Justin McDonald we've seen almost every night, but he can't be superman every time he plays.

TJ Constant showed well in his first game back, was a little slow but he'll be back into game mode shortly.

A few players had awful games last night, if you were at the game you know who they were.

I thought Jack Petrino played tremendously well as did his linemates Parker Sharp and Bradley Swampy.

I think we might see Mollard try Petrino out on that top line on Wednesday, the kid can fly.

Landon Noel Swan's new goaltender was not very impressive, his positioning is good but his rebound control is just awful. If the Blizzard had crashed the net more like they did on Petrino's goal they would have had plenty of opportunities.

All in all Swan didn't play very well, they're not a dangerous team, OCN just didn't get the bounces and missing three regulars from the lineup certainly didn't help.

Wednesday will be a fun game to watch.

Bring your boxing mitts, I expect OCN to even the tone from the opening draw.

Blizzard Preview vs Swan Valley

The Stamps are hot, winning five in a row.

They have a new goaltender in Landon Noel the Sudbury product who's been playing very well for the Stampeders. In the last two weeks they've been climbing the standings as before they were in dead last in the MJHL  they're now only one point behind Dauphin for second in the Sher-Wood division.

Noel is a perfect 4-0 since coming to the Stamps via trade from the MHL, he has a 1.96 GAA and .932 sv %.  Meanwhile Dylan Reimer has found his scoring touch as he has 8 points in seven games and leads Swan Valley in scoring with seven goals and seven assists.

The Stampeders are coming off a 4-2 win over the Virden Oil Capitals in Virden, Dylan Reimer was the games first star scoring two goals.

Here is how these two teams matchup:

Record:

OCN: 12-3-1 / 27pts 1st in Sher-wood & MJHL
SWAN: 7-4-1 / 15pts 3rd in Sher-wood & 4th in MJHL

Powerplay:

OCN: 6/62 - 9.68% 11th
SWAN: 8/53 - 15.09% 8th

Penalty Kill:

OCN: 81/93 - 87.10% 1st
SWAN: 40/47 - 85.11% 3rd

Top Scorer:

OCN: Tyler Grove - 6G, 10A - 16pts in 16GP
SWAN: Dylan Reimer - 7G. 7A - 14 pts in 12GP

Top Goalie:

OCN: Justin McDonald - 9W/1L - 1.89GAA - .950sv% - 3SO
SWAN: Landon Noel - 4W/0L - 1.96GAA - .932sv%

The last time these two teams played OCN shutout Swan Valley in their own barn on the second half of a home and home.

Swan is a very different team this time around.

It will be another tough game for the Blizzard.

Injury update:

Captain TJ Constant makes his return to the lineup tonight, Thomas Ward-Cardinal rode the bike for the first time yesterday and is about two weeks away from returning and Taylor Santorelli hurt his back/neck in Neepawa and might be unavailable.

Puck drop is at 7:30, pregame at 7:15.

Enjoy your Saturday!

About Last Night... Northstars 7 - Storm 5

The Storm only had three forward lines and four defensemen.

I think had they been able to ice a full roster they would have won. It was a pretty good game.

The Storm were sloppy in the defensive zone to start the game but picked things up 10 minutes into the tenth period and went back and forth with the Northstars.

Some players who stood out from the Storm:

Captain Leon Church's experience as a Junior player really shows.

Dustin Dorion is a great skater with some pretty good hands and impressed me.

Kevin Scott played a solid game defensively.

Jon Asmus is a standout in goal.

There are certainly some pieces to build off of and some coaching will get the Storm to their first win. Apparently the Storm only have 17 players registered with the league and that's why they could only dress 13 players.

I'm sure all that will be rectified before the next game.

Storm Lineup + Church - Jebb resign

A home game for the OCN Storm is marred by the resignation of team General Manager Gatlin Church and the teams president Mike Jebb.

I'm told both have quit for personal reasons, this follows the departure of assistant coach Dwayne Whitehead  who left earlier this week.

The Storm are host to the Norway House Northstars tonight at 8PM at the GLMC.

Here is the Storm's lineup for this evening.

G - Jon Asmus Personius 31
G - Branden Constant 1

F - Leon Church 91
F - Romario Constant 12
F - Dustin Dorion 44
F - Kenton Fayant 6
F - Ayrton Kadachuk 16
F - Harold Linklater 82
D - Bryson Constant 9
D - Peter Norman 77
F - Allan Personius 7
D - Kevin Scott 2
F - Brandon Turner 14
F - Glenn Young 4
F - Jory Hadiken 93

The Storm are (0-6) coming into tonight's matchup while the Northstars are (0-4) so someone is getting their first win tonight.

I look forward to watching the Storm play for the first time this season, hopefully it isn't the only time!

Enjoy the game if you're coming down to the rink.

Blizzard 3 - Wolverines 0

The Blizzard now have the same record versus Waywayseecappo as the score was in tonight's game.

It was a much better game all around for OCN. At no point did the defence completely break down, the Blizzard played a full 60 minutes tonight and it showed.

Of course, as always when called upon Justin McDonald stood tall making a few spectacular saves. One that comes to mind was on the PK early in the first period sliding left to right and making a great pad save.

Edward Bayer has come alive offensively and seems to be gelling really well with Grove and Gray, he has great puck skills, vision and speed also a good passer in tight spaces. Although there were two questionable decisions in the defensive end, but that part will come, he's an offensive guy.

Darien Cardinal had his strongest game of the season in my mind. He back checked ferociously, made good plays on the board in the defensive end and his hands tonight were unbelievable, he seems to have found some confidence and is played very very well.

Lineup vs Wayway

Here is tonight's lineup vs Wayway.

Goal

McDonald - Starter

Robak / Kavanaugh

WAYWAY LINEUP (NO ORDER)

5 - David Haaf
6- Cody Labrecque

11 - Curtis Veitch
13 - Zaine Walker

In chatting with Waywayseecappo Head Coach before the game he mentioned they just simply didn't get the bounces last night versus Virden. According to Butler it's happened often this season. Wayway lost 2-1 last night and they'll finish off the last of six game in eight day stretch on Saturday in Winkler.

Other teams are starting to play their three game in three night stretches, luckily for OCN they only have one of those left.

An update on the injury to Captain TJ Constant, he told me he'll be in the lineup on Saturday in Swan Valley. Needless to say a huge boost to the OCN lineup.

As for Thomas Ward-Cardinal he's still out for 2-3 weeks, but he's been icing his ankle every day hoping for a quick return.

Other highlights for tonight's game:

* Jack Petrino makes his Blizzard start (Petrino will be wearing Gamblin's former #27)
* Grove looks to get back in the groove after being held off the scoresheet on Sunday in Neepawa, Grove had points in five straight games previous to that.
* Justin McDonald is going for his fourth straight win
* Parker Sharp looks to get a point in three straight games.

Oh and a neat stat from Sunday's game against Neepawa courtesy of Jamie Smalley - Sunday's loss ends a 15 game winning streak for the Blizzard over the Natives.

Puck drop is at seven, if you're contemplating coming down tonight get over here, always a good game between these two.

Storm Make a Big Trade

The following release is directly from OCN Storm GM Gatlin Church....

"The OCN Storm and rookie GM Gatlin Church have made their biggest trade in franchise history.

The Storm have traded away the playing rights of 18 year old Jameson Scott for three player in return. Scott has scored 8 goals 3 assists and 38 pims in 5 combined games for the Storm. Scott also played AAA midget last season with the Norman Northstars and was a standout at this past year's NAHC in Saskatoon for team Manitoba.

Going the other way are 21 year olds Scott Apetagon and Jordan Richards who where both a part of the long play-off drive by the Northstars last season. Also included in the deal was 6'2" Defenseman Zek Awoyemi. Awoyemi will fill the void on the backend for Storm and provide them with some much more needed experience on the blueline.

The Storm has allowed the most goals against in the KJHL so far this season, with 51. Now the team has added to there very thin blueline it looks like this.

(Age and experience)

Bryson Constant 94
OCN Midget Blues AA

Kevin Scott 93

Norway House Northstars (KJHL)
Norman AAA Northstars

Dustin Dorion 93

OCN Midget AA

Pistons Rous MJHL POW

This from the MJHL site...

Kyle Rous of the Steinbach Pistons has been named the MJHL Player of the Week, ending October 21.

The 20-year-old defenceman showed he’s not only a steady man along the blueline, but also demonstrated his offensive skills with five points (1-4) and an impressive  +7 rating over a three-game span for the Pistons who sit third in the Addison Division with five wins and 11 points ─ five back of division leading Winnipeg Blues.

The runners up are 20 year old goaltender Landon Noel of the Swan Valley Stampeders and 20 year old goaltender Jeremy Pominville of the Dauphin Kings.

Six from MJHL Make Team West WJAC Camp

Five players out of the forty who attended the MJHL Team West evaluation camp will be heading to Calgary for the main selection camp.

OCN Blizzard players Wilson Dumais, TJ Constant and Garick Gray all got snubbed.

The five players selected are:

Parker Thomas (F) - Selkirk: 11G, 6A - 12GP
Kurt Keats (F) - Winnipeg: 7G, 8A - 12GP
Denis Bosc (F) - Steinbach: 7G, 5A - 11GP
Tanner Jago (D) - Winkler: 6G, 6A - 13GP
Paul Stoykewych (D) - Winnipeg: 1G, 7A - 12GP
Hudson Friesen (F) - Selkirk: 3G, 6A - 10GP

I don't know how someone like Brenden Hurley from Dauphin gets snubbed over Friesen (no disrespect to Friesen), or how a guy with a complete game like Wilson Dumais is bumped as well.

Interesting to note all five players are from teams within an hour of Winnipeg.

Blizzard 4 - Steelers 3... About Last Night

Justin McDonald weathered the storm in the first five minutes for the Blizzard.

Then Tyler Grove scored his sixth of the season just seconds shy from being his third shorthanded goal of the year a beautiful breakaway move to beat Michalik

Garick Gray potted one none too later off another scramble in front and Brady Constant rifled one home after that just off a draw to the Right of Michalik.

The Blizzard did a great job of getting traffic to the net and disrupting Michalik last night. The Power play clicked again on Gray's marker. Things seem to be coming along in that department. I know that Mollard had talked about getting traffic to the net on the power play and using the point shot for rebounds and tip ins.

The Blizzard defence again got a little lost in their own end at times. Consistency defensively seems to be a problem at home. That will just come with time. Bayer looked very good in his first full game on the second line and picked up the primary assist on Gray's goal.

Making a nice move in the corner then dishing it out front. He's coming along quite well. Grove had another strong game extending his point streak to 9 points in the last 5 games. Henry gets the start tonight in Neepawa as the Blizz look to make it 3-0 weekend.

 Enjoy your Sunday. -Brad-

Blizzard 5 - Wolverines 4 SO .... About Last Night

As I said in last night's quick recap it was a tough win, a very ugly win but a win none the less.

We'll start off with an injury update on Thomas Ward-Cardinal. He has a sprained right ankle and will be out for the next 2-3 weeks. This is a blessing in disguise as at first it looked like he blew out his knee and could have torn his ACL or MCL, he's lucky that his ankle gave out first. The knee injury would have had him on the shelf for 3-5 months.

OCN had troubles defensively much too often with coverage completely collapsing for extended periods of time. Justin McDonald made timely saves as always and did very well in the shootout.

The Wolverines opened the scoring as Andrew Clark capitalized on a Justin McDonald misplay behind the net 3:47 in to the opening frame.

No more than five minutes later the Wolverines took three penalties on the same play as Zaine Walker received a game misconduct, Waywayseecappo's captain Curtis Veitch took a four minute penalty for butt-ending and Russell Turner took two for tripping.

Blizzard defenceman Nathan Bruyere would capitalize on the powerplay blowing a strong wrist shot past Riley Feser from the left point.

With 1:55 left in the first period Waywayseecappo would take a 2-1 lead as a long sequence in the offensive zone where OCN failed to clear many times led to Kyle Threndyle's first goal of the year from just outside the slot.

That goal was a perfect example of OCN's defensive misplays, the Blizzard had 3-4 chances to clear off the boards but just couldn't get it done. Whether it was a weak play off the boards or no support to the winger off the wall that's something that will continue to cost them goals all season.

In the second period OCN held control of the play leading on the shot clock 18-7. Second period goals came just 58 seconds apart from Darien Cardinal who tipped home a shot by Valiquette and Garick Gray who jammed home a point shot which sprung off the rebound.

The third period saw Garick Gray score his second goal of the game with 3:38 left as he was sprung on a breakaway by Tyler Grove, Gray made a beautiful move to beat Feser all alone. That goal gave OCN what seemed like a cushy 4-2 lead with under four minutes in third. Fans started streaming out of the GLMC thinking the game was in the bag.

But OCN's defensive troubles led to two quick goals a minute apart with under two minutes in the third as the Wolverines tied the game at four thanks to Brett Pinkerton and David Haaf who walked in off the draw and whistled a wrister past McDonald.

After a full 60 minutes of play OCN led on the shot clock 37-33 and should have been able to win the game in regulation time but overtime solved nothing.

In the shootouts Jim Mollard decided to shoot second as Waywayseecappo sent Drake Bodie out first, he was stuffed by Justin McDonald.

Mollard responded with Wilson Dumais who fired a shot glove side on Feser and moves to 2/2 on shootout attempts this season.

Both teams would have to wait until the sixth round in the shootouts when Nathan Bruyere would win the game in shootouts for OCN walking in and beating Feser with a hard snapshot blocker side on the Waywayseecappo goaltender.

Tyler Grove picked up three assists, while Garick Gray had two goals and Nathan Bruyere had a good game offensively creating some solid opportunities offensively.

Gray played his best game of the season, scary to think he's only a 94 born. He and Grove are really starting to find the scoreboard.

Justin McDonald had a hard time handling the puck tonight, normally he's very good at it, maybe it was just an off night in that area for him.

Parker Sharp looked alright in his debut, it will take time for him to adjust to his new team and surroundings, but you can see the speed and physical play that will come with time.

Eddie Bayer played his best game of the season going from the fourth to second line and fit in comfortably with Gray and Grove. He's starting to find his groove.

It's always a good sign when you play one of your worst games of the season but still find a way to win, but the Blizzard will have to tighten up defensively if they want to continue their hot start.

Pitre Tire 3 Stars:

1. Nathan Bruyere (1PPG, 1SOW)
2. Garick Gray (2G)
3. Tyler Grove (3A)

Blizzard 5 - Waywayseecappo 4 SO

The Blizzard win a tough one, not anywhere close to pretty.

The Blizzard blew a 2 goal lead in the dying minutes of the game with the tying mark with under a minute left.

OCN controlled the play for the whole game with a heavy lead in shots on goal for the majority of the game but at times the defence looked completely lost again on home ice.

Garick Gray had two goals, Tyler Grove two assists and Nathan Bruyere scored the shootout winner.

It's two points, but the Blizzard needlessly gave up a point to a team in the division.

Full recap tomorrow.

Enjoy your Friday!

Sharp and Petrino Arrive + Update on TJ

Both Parker Sharp and Jack Petrino were at practice today. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to interview any of them and the camera on my phone is broken for photo proof. I had to leave practice early due to other work commitments.

Although I can confirm that both Sharp and Petrino were on the ice today practicing with their new teammates.

Sharp was centering a line with Gray and Grove on the flanks, it looks like we might see the Dumais, Valiquette, Cardinal line for a few more games until TJ Constant returns.

Sharp will be in the lineup tomorrow night, meanwhile Petrino will have to wait a few days until the appropriate is filed and pushed through with the league because he's an American born.

I didn't get to see them in a real hard skating game situation drills but both seem to bring a certain amount of speed to the lineup and both are still quite young.

We'll see how Sharp does tomorrow.

TJ Constant skated around before practice testing out his ankle. He says he's still a few days away from a return as he doesn't have 100% power.

Tomorrow should be a good game, first home game in what seems like forever with a hot team coming up to visit in Waywayseecappo. Puck drop is at 7. Hopefully I'll see you all at the GLMC, if not I will be doing the game live on CJ1240 with pre-game at 6:45.

Enjoy a beautiful Thursday evening here in The Pas!

Blizzard Trade Baptiste to Llyodminster Bobcats

The Baptiste deal has finally gone through.

Here is how it breaks down.

TO OCN:

F - Parker Sharp (94)

F - Jack Petrino (94)

TO LLYODMINSTER:

F - Kolton Baptiste (92)

Future Considerations

I also just got off the phone with GM Derek Fontaine, here is what he had to say.

As Fontaine said, both players are expected to report, and as per Sharp's twitter he's on the road to OCN now.

More notes on Petrino and Sharp:

This is a press release from the Langley Rivermen (BCHL) upon signing Petrino:

Township of Langley, BC, Wednesday, May 9, 2012: The Langley Rivermen Junior “A” Hockey Club is pleased to announce the commitment of forward Jack Petrino (1994) to the team for next season. Jack hails from Rochester Hills, Michigan and played for the Vancouver Victory in the Northern Pacific Hockey League (NOR PAC). In 40 games, Jack recorded 18 goals and 21 assists for a total of 39 points.

Petrino is thrilled to play Junior “A” Hockey next season in Langley,

“I am extremely excited to start my junior career in Langley and cannot wait to get there in a couple of months,” said Petrino.

Choosing to come to Langley was not a very hard decision as he is a big fan of the new Head Coach,

“I really like Coach Henderson, he is a very nice guy and made me feel right at home when I went there and just overall knows his stuff and seems like the type of guy you would like to play for,” continued Petrino.

Head Coach Bobby Henderson is equally excited to have Jack on board with the Rivermen,

“Jack was a very highly touted Midget player that we targeted and are fortunate to have,” said Henderson, “he plays an up tempo style and possesses great speed and can play any wing up front and is a guy that we see that can develop the potential to be a potent goal scorer in this league”.

Petrino describes himself as a player that will do whatever it takes to win,

“I will do anything the coaches ask of me to do, but if I had to describe myself as a player I would say I am a hard working, playmaking forward, but can also put the puck in the back of the net” Petrino said.

Petrino feels that playing in Langley will help him reach his personal goal of obtaining a hockey scholarship,

“I hope to learn something new about Hockey when I am there that will help get me to the NCAA ranks because that is my ultimate goal, I have always wanted to play there for quite some time now,” Petrino finished.

Meanwhile Parker Sharp was awarded the "Top Forward Award" by the Grande Peace athletic club on the Ernie's Sports Experts Major Midget AAA team last season.

McDonald Runner up POW

Justin McDonald was named as a runner up for the MJHL player of the week award.

The winner is the suddenly hot Winkler Flyers 17-year old Tristan Keck. Keck scored three goals and picked up four assists in the past week.

After going 0-4 to start the season the Flyers haven't lost in regulation in their last six improving their record to 4-4-2.

McDonald meanwhile went 2-1 in the past week picking up wins over the Dauphin Kings and Portage Terriers along with a loss to the Winnipeg Blues.

McDonald stopped 93 of 100 shots in that stretch for a save percentage of .930. The Blizzard goaltender leads all goaltenders in the MJHL with at least 3 starts this season with a 1.70GAA and a .958 sv%

The Dauphin Kings Brendan Hurley was the other nominee for player of the week. Hurley scored four goals and added three assists over four games since last Tuesday.

Winnipeg 7 - Blizzard 2

From the thesaurus:

Synonyms (Grouped by Similarity of Meaning) of verb beat

Sense 1:
beat, beat out, crush, shell, trounce, vanquish

Choose anyone of the above words to describe what Winnipeg did to the Blizzard tonight.

The Blizzard got in the box early but Grove managed to get a short handed goal and put OCN up 1-0 early on. The parade to the box continued and it killed them, plain and simple the difference tonight was penalties.

OCN's PK got beat up technically Winnipeg scored on 4 of 7 chances but their first goal was scored a second after Bruyere's penalty was up and he had just stepped out of the box.

When play was 5 vs 5 as it was for the 2nd and third periods OCN was able to keep up with the Blues even though I'm sure they were beat from killing off 10 minutes of penalties in the first.

Hopefully this game gets the players to realize that no matter how good they are lazy penalties will always cost them.

OCN is in Portage tomorrow night.

Game Day Preview vs Winnipeg Blues

It was billed as a battle of the giants at the showcase last weekend, since then the Portage Terriers have taken a three point edge on the Blues in the Addison division and the Blues now sit seven points back of the OCN Blizzard.

It will still be a tough test, the Blues are a good team with tons of offensive firepower.

The Blizzard come into tonight's game with a record of 8-1-1 good for 17 points and first overall in the league standings, the Blues meanwhile sit at 5-3 for 10 points and second in the Addison division.

The Blues are on a three game losing skid after suffering losses to Virden, Neepawa and a spanking by Winkler 7-3 last night.

TRENDS

The Blues strength lies in their offensive power having scored a league leading 38 goals on the season but have allowed an average of 3.62 goals against in their 8 games this season their goaltenders also have a combined save percentage of just .879%

In their last three losses the Blues have allowed a total of 16 goals and scored 11 themselves.

Meanwhile for the OCN Blizzard their last three games have all been decided by just one goal. The first a 2-1 SO win over Portage, followed by a 3-2 win over Dauphin on Tuesday and last nights 3-2 OT loss to Selkirk.

In that time frame the Blizzard allowed six goals and scored six themselves (SO winner doesn't count).

The Blizzards strength of late has been in goal as the offence has not been as dominant as it was earlier in the season. The Blizzard's combined save percentage is first in the league at .956%.

Steelers 3 - Blizzard 2 OT

A win they should have had.

The Blizzard didn't play their best tonight, twice they had a one goal lead but couldn't hold on.

You could tel by the time the third period rolled around that all the time spent on the PK took it's toll on the Blizzard.

Whenever they'd start to get things going they'd end up down a man.

Robak looked pretty solid in his Blizzard debut.

Bayer had trouble keeping up towards the end of the game, probably due to lack of big minutes early this season. He'd have to go back to his final playoff game with NorMan to find that much ice time played.

OCN just didn't have their mojo tonight.

Henry looked good again.

About Last Night.... OCN 3 - Dauphin 2

All hail Justin McDonald.

What a fantastic performance by the Sask kid. 57 of 59 saves plus one unbelievable post to post pad save on Jesse Sinatyinski who scored 59 goals last year with 1:42 left in the third period.

The Blizzard had no legs in the first and were heavily outplayed by a strong Dauphin team. Their 3-3 record is not indicative of the strength on the team at all, they are tremedously deep offensively and have a few defenders who can really move the puck.

In reality this win was all about Justin McDonald stealing the show and the Blizzard rallying around him to win the game for him.

The penalty kill was perfect again but the Kings were able to pass the puck through the Blizzard's big box for one timer opportunities on the off wings, but those are just in game adjustments that need to be made in tightening up things in the slot and putting more pressure on the boards.

The Blizzard showed great grit and never gave up, which has been a strong quality in this team since day one and will allow them to stay in any game they play this season.

It's another character win on the road, there have been plenty of those early this season which bodes well for when the Blizzard are at home throughout most of the winter.

Here is how yesterday's scoring broke down:

Lineup vs Dauphin

First start with news concerning the roster.

Kolton Baptiste and Kirk Chief have decided to leave the team for personal reasons.

Here is tonight's lineup.

Forwards

15 Dumais / 19 TJ Constant / 10 Cardinal
16 Grove / 11 Valiquette / 25 Gray
9 Lathlin / 23 Santorelli / 28 Swampy
26 MacInnis / 8 Cameron / 12 B.Constant

Defensemen

4 Elmes / 5 Ward-Cardinal
7 Bruyere / 17 Cochrane
3 Dusik / 20 Kavanaugh

Goaltenders

30 McDonald
33 Henry

McDonald gets his second start in a row, it looks like this way he plays Winnipeg on Saturday.

With his numbers he'll probably get the tougher starts, although Henry is certainly no slouch. OCN is lucky to have the two best goalies in the league early on.

Blizzard in Dauphin - Preview

The OCN Blizzard hit the road for Dauphin in just a few hours time.

Last season the Kings went 41-16-5 to finish first in the Sherwood division and second overall in the league two points behind Portage.

This is the first meeting between these two teams this season.

Last year the Blizzard went 3-5-0-1 against the Kings with a 2-1-0-1 record at home and 1-4 in Dauphin.

OCN won the first three games of the series and then lost the remaining six scoring a total of 29 goals and allowing 35 against in the season series.

This is a new year, and a new series and the Blizzard have to be favourites heading into tonight's tilt in Dauphin.

Here is how the two teams matchup:

RECORD

OCN -- 7-1 / 14PTS
DAU -- 3-2 / 6PTS

GOAL DIFF

OCN -- +15
DAU -- -2

POWERPLAY

OCN-- 3/27 (11.1%) 10th Overall
DAU-- 8/21 (38.1%) 1st Overall

PENALTY KILL

OCN-- 40/44 (90.91%) 1st Overall
DAU-- 5/26 (80.77%) 6th Overall

TOP SCORERS

OCN - Thomas Ward-Cardinal (4G, 5A, 9PTS)
DAU - Brendan Hurley (6G, 1A, 7PTS)

The Kings are coming off a 9-3 loss to Steinbach to close out the showcase, they'll be hungry. Should be a great game. I would also expect Favreau to get going for them soon as well.

Pre-Game at 6:45.

Talk to you later!

Blizzard 2 Portage 1 in Shootouts - Perfect at Showcase

Another big win. A tough win to leave the showcase with four points.

The Blizzard got into early penalty trouble with Wilson Dumais getting into the box just 11 seconds in. Lyndon Lypinski tipped in a point shot just a few minutes later on the Powerplay to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead.

Which they would hold onto until Garick Gray tied it up with about 6:30 left in the third period off a grimy goal in front of the net.

The Blizzard had jelly legs and fought the puck throughout most of the first and into the second period. Things turned around and they controlled the play for the entire third period.

OCN had a number of chances to go ahead in the last six and a half minutes, Kirk Chief and Grant Valiquette both missed what were essentially open nets.

Nonetheless OCN would take things into the shootout where Head Coach Jim Mollard decided that OCN would shoot second.

Matt Glowa shot first for Portage but McDonald came up big with a glove save as Glowa went to the backhand.

Wilson Dumais scored low blocker side for OCN.

Zack Waldvogel almost had McDonald beat dragging the puck up to the post but couldn't get it across the line on Portage's second shot.

Thomas Ward-Cardinal scored the shootout winner by putting the puck in the same place that Dumais did.

Here is tonight's scoring summary:

1st Period

PTG 2:19 (PP) - L.Lypinski (4) Assists: Waldvogel, Kuczek

2nd Period

NONE

3rd Period

OCN 13:21 - Gray (2) Assists: Valiquette, Grove

Shots

PTG - 31
OCN - 31

Justin McDonald made 30 saves for his fourth win of the season, keeps his goals against average of 0.97 and improves his save percentage drops two points to 0.975

Pitre Tire 3 Stars:

1. Thomas Ward-Cardinal (GWG)
2. Justin McDonald (30/31 saves, 2/2 in SO)
3. Garick Gray (1G)

Northern Building Supply Hardest Working Player:

Wilson Dumais

The Blizzard are on the way home. A tough test against Dauphin on Tuesday followed by another weekend on the road beginning with Selkirk on Friday, followed by the Blues on Sunday and finally Portage on Sunday.

With the Blues loss to the Natives just as the OCN bus pulled away from the IcePlex OCN has a four point hold on top spot in the league.

Enjoy your thanksgiving weekend, stuff yourselves with turkey and spirits.
