Blizzard 2 - Kings 3

A panorama shot I took of tonight's second period action.
Hockey is a 60 minute game, a 5 minute span cost the OCN Blizzard a win tonight.

OCN dominated the play in the first period, leading in the shots on goal 6-0 for the first five minutes. It felt like Dauphin barely made it past the red line in the first period.

I wrote before the game that staying out of the box would be crucial to a win tonight, 8 penalties for OCN, Dauphin scored on one of them just 20 seconds into the third period. An awkward angle shot that snuck through the leg of McDonald and the post off the stick of Guillaume Naud.

Waskewitch and Baptiste
in warm ups.
A brutal cough up by Tim Kavanaugh in the slot to Gaudet let the Kings tie things up and an awkward bounce on a puck play by McDonald would give Sinatynski the game winner.

It was probably the most exciting game I've seen all year, great hockey, pace and speed and the competitiveness between the two teams was intense. Two fights and plenty of chippy play and after the whistle physicality gave the game a playoff like feel.

Justin Waskewitch made his debut tonight, his hands were there, on the power play he made some pretty slick moves, but you can tell it had been awhile since he played. It'll come, the kids got some supreme talent.

The Blizzard's parade to the penalty box is what ultimately cost them the game.

It's not an excuse but the Blizzard will be much improved when healthy with the likes of TJ Constant, Garick Gray and Tagoona back from his suspension.

Here is Clay DeBray and his thoughts on tonight's game.

Blizzard Host Kings in Sher-Wood Battle of the Titans

The two best teams in the MJHL take to the ice tonight at the GLMC (yes I know Winnipeg has more points than Dauphin but the Kings winning percentage is greater).

Tonight is a match up I think both teams have had in the back of their mind over the last two weeks as these two clubs have continued to win.

Both teams have made numerous moves over the last few weeks to strengthen their clubs. Dauphin (17-6-1) brought in Gaudet and sent Ryan Luiten to the AJHL for Dayton Reinboldt who has 10 points in 7 games since coming to the MJHL.

Meanwhile the Blizzard (20-7-2) picked up Roger Tagoona and Justin Waskewitch on Monday. Waskewitch will make his debut tonight.

It's a statement game tonight for both teams, I think the Kings may feel slighted after being left off the CJHL top 20 rankings week after week even though they've had the highest winning percentage in the MJHL for a number of weeks now.

I think for OCN people are finally starting to believe that this club can do something special this season, and both teams I'm sure want to prove to the other that they are the Titans of the Sher-Wood division.

The key for OCN tonight will be to stay out of the box. The Kings are a chippy team and will try to goad the Blizzard into take retaliatory penalties. Dauphin has a deadly power play led by Jesse Sinatynski and Jon Gaudet. The Kings are first overall in the MJHL on the PP clicking at a blistering 28.97%.

Although OCN does have the top penalty kill in the MJHL at 85.42% its a game the Blizzard would be wise to stay away from.

Waskewitch will make his Blizzard debut tonight, while Tagoona will have to wait until Tuesday in Waywayseecappo as a mix up with Hockey Saskatchewan means that Wednesdays game doesn't count towards his two game suspension.

Some people may have been looking forward to seeing Tim Perks tonight, he's just been traded to the Winkler Flyers for future considerations.

Puck drop is at 7:00PM. Tonight's game will not be on the radio but Christian Laughland from 730 CKDM in Dauphin will be broadcasting tonight, you can listen here http://730ckdm.ca/.

Will post lineups once I get to the rink.

Fontaine Re: Tagoona, Waskewitch

Seems like I've got all the bugs out now, had some problems with blogger and mixcloud. Hopefully all fixed now and no more posts get deleted!

Again here is the Fontaine interview.

Preview vs Neepawa

The Blizzard (19-7-2) will hit the road going south to Neepawa (6-16-2) for a match up with the worst team in the MJHL.

OCN will head south with Roger Tagoona already in town and Justin Waskewitch on his way this afternoon.

Waskewitch will play on Friday against Dauphin while Tagoona will be in the lineup on Sunday in Swan River as he still needs to serve a two game suspension for hitting from behind that he picked up in the SJHL.

The Blizzard are 2-1 against Neepawa this season with the lone loss coming on the road by a score of 4-3.

The Natives have scored the fewest goals this season and after trading away Justin Dalebozik their leading scorer is Brayden Cuthbert who has just 16 points.

Tonight's  match up will feature the two worst power play units in the MJHL. Neepawa clicks at 15.32% which is 10th in the league and OCN clicks at 13.91%.

On the flip side of the special teams battle OCN is tops in the league at 84.11% while Neepawa is 9th at 77.27%.

Will have the lineup a little later on today.

OCN Acquires Waskewitch From Battlefords

On the sport report last night Blizzard GM Derek Fontaine alluded to two moves to bring in some help offensively.

Justin Waskewitch
The first was Roger Tagoona which was announced earlier today, and now the Blizzard have acquired 5'11 180lb RW Justin Waskewitch from Battlefords North Stars of the SJHL, in return the Blizzard have sent future considerations to Battlefords.

Waskewitch is a 20 year old from Cut Knife, Saskatchewan who picked up 51 points in 47 games with Nipawin last season.

Waskewitch started the season with the Ochapawace Thunder of the Prairie Junior Hockey League due to personal reasons and had his rights dealt from Nipawin to Battlefords.

Throughout his SJHL career in parts of four seasons with three different teams Waskewitch has scored 38 goals and has picked up a total of 109 points in 152 games (according to the elite prospects numbers he's only played 14 games this season, in reality he has played 15), giving Waskewitch a 0.72 PPG

Today's acquisitions gives OCN some serious depth up front, and gives the Blizzard a legitimate top end player to play with TJ Constant and who ever is on his left wing.

The Blizzard will have seven top six forwards when Gray & TJ Constant return from injury. A good problem to have and will give the Blizzard more depth when inevitably more injuries hit the club.

Waskewitch will not play tomorrow night, he might play against Dauphin on Friday as paper work needs to get sorted out.

As for Tagoona he has a two games suspension from the SJHL to serve and will not play until Sunday in Swan Valley.

Tagoona practiced with the Blizzard today and Waskewitch will be in OCN tomorrow.

I have an interview set for 10 am with Blizzard GM Derek Fontaine.

I will post it here once it is finished, and will also run it during the second intermission of tomorrow's broadcast.

Here are Waskewitch's numbers

OCN Acquires Roger Tagoona From Estevan

The OCN Blizzard have acquired F (92) Roger Tagoona from the Estevan Bruins for future considerations.
Roger Tagoona

He's a big boy at 6'0, 195lbs and plays a physical game.

Tagoona has played 126 games in the SJHL racking up 70 points in parts of three seasons with Melville, Battlefords and Estevan.

The Rankin Inlet Native has scored 26 goals over his Jr.A career and averages 0.55 points per game.

Tagoona is from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut and played midget hockey with the NorMan Northstars.

Will hopefully have an interview and more information later today.

Tagoona will practice with the team today, possibly play tomorrow in Neepawa.

**EDIT: Tagoona is suspended for 2 games and will serve the suspension from the SJHL. Tagoona's first chance to play will be Sunday in Swan River.**

I would expect maybe another move from the Blizzard this week.

Here are Tagoona's stats.

Blizzard 4 - Oil Capitals 2... About Last Night

No wifi on the bus and a late return home coupled with a Storm game this afternoon leads to a late post on the blog today.

It was a tough first period for both teams last night, a broken play led to a Kurt Johnas breakaway and he scored a beautiful goal short side on Alex Henry. Johnas is going to be a pretty special player in this league once he fills out.

Shots were 6-6 after the first 20 minutes. The first period saw numerous icings, broken plays and just sloppy hockey in general, it was a slow game with the middle bottled up.

In the second Ty Edmonds stood on his head.

That is until Tyler Grove scored on the Power play with five minutes left in the period (goal was given to Petrino but he never touched the puck).

With three minutes left in the second frame Baptiste would knock in a Kirk Chief rebound putting the Blizzard up 2-1.

The second period was controlled by the Blizzard leading on the shot clock 11-7. The Oil Capitals didn't get many quality opportunities. Most of their shots were long drives from the wing.

The third was once again the Blizzard controlling the tempo but Virden did tie things up 2-2 just 25 seconds into the third frame as Elmes was stepping out of the box.

Four minutes into the third Tim Kavanaugh lets a wrister fly from the point that hit a Virden defender and found its way past Ty Edmonds for his first real goal of the season. Kavanaugh got credit for a Valiquette goal in the showcase.

The Blizzard powerplay went 2 for 3, they're finally working things from the point with traffic and getting tip ins or rebound opportunities. They scored four powerplay goals this weekend, improving their percentage to 13.91%.

4 out of 5 points is pretty good considering the Blizzard are out three of their top six forwards and a top four defensemen.

Cochrane will be back for Wednesday as will Dumais.

TJ and Garick are still out for a few weeks.

Road trip picture blog to come.

Blizzard at Virden - Preview

The Blizzard (18-7-2) were 3-0 against Waywayseecappo (10-11-2) before last night, the same is true against Virden (10-10-5) heading into tonight's game.

Virden is a very young team and are building for the future.

The Oil Capitals were blown out 5-1 by the Kings last night. Virden only had 15 shots on goal.

As for OCN a  6-5 shootout loss was a tough pill to swallow. Justin McDonald told me this morning that it was his first career shootout loss and now sits at 7-1.

The Blizzard played last nights game without Ralph Cochrane (home sick), Wilson Dumais (home for personal reasons), Garick Gray (concussed) and TJ Constant left the game in the first period with a hip pointer. The same injury that kept Tyler Grove out of the lineup for a month. TJ will be out for an extended period of time as well and will not be playing tonight.

So all the Blizzard players will be in the lineup tonight. Alex Henry will get the start.

Here is how the lines will break down to start.

Goal

Alex Henry - Starter
Justin McDonald - Backup

Defense

Elmes / Ward-Cardinal
Bruyere / Fontaine
Kavanaugh / Robak

Forwards

Grove / Bayer / B.Constant
Swampy / Valiquette / Petrino
Chief / Baptiste / Cardinal
MacInnis / Cameron / Lathlin

Waywayseecappo 6 - OCN 5 SO

It wasn't a pretty game, and it certainly wasn't a pretty loss.

It was a game without much flow, if any and everytime the Blizzard score Waywayseecappo came back right away.

Justin McDonald has had stronger games, Thomas Ward-Cardinal had a goal and an assist but struggled at times, but that's to be expected.

Brady Constant had a rough game, but again, he's very young and the consistency will come.

Grant Valiquette had another great game, as did Brad Swampy and Jack Petrino.

The more I watch Petrino and Valiquette the scarier the future looks for the Blizzard.

This is still a very young team, with growing pains.

They get a chance to rebound quickly tomorrow night in Virden.

** I hope to have more on TJ tomorrow.

As for Parker Sharp with Chief coming back he was asked to go on a Jr.B card, Sharp decided he wanted to be traded elsewhere.

Expect some moves to be made this week with the Blizzard.

Dumais went home for personal reasons this weekend and is expected to return to the club.

Blizz Lineup vs Wayway

Dumais and Sharp did not make the trip and Cochrane is sick.

Dumais is taking time  for personal reasons, he is expected to return to the club shortly.

Ward-Cardinal and Chief make their returns tonight.

Sharp is waiting for a trade, more during the Murray GM first intermission.

Here is tonight's lineup.

Blizzard Head South to Waywayseecappo then Virden

The Blizzard (18-7-2) will board the bus tomorrow morning with the wheels pointed towards Waywayseecappo (9-11-2) for a Friday night dance with the Wolverines. OCN will then hit the road to the Brandon area for the night before playing Virden on Saturday.

The Wolverines are struggling this season as they've had a hard time keeping the puck out of their net. Waywayseecappo has the third highest goals against average per game in the league at 3.86 and they sit second last in the Sher-Wood Division with just 20 points.

Meanwhile OCN is coming off four days off after playing three games in three nights and going 2-1 with wins versus Selkirk and Winnipeg and the lone loss against Winkler. The Blizzard have now won six of their last seven games.

In the last ten games the two teams have opposite records with the Blizzard at 6-4 and Waywayseecappo at 4-6.

The Blizzard will look to keep the train rolling this weekend without the services of Garick Gray, but they may be bolstered by the return of Thomas Ward-Cardinal.

The Blizzard defender has been out since October 19th when he suffered a high ankle sprain against the Wolverines in the first period. He had accumulated 11 points (5G, 6A) in 13 games before his injury. It's not 100% sure that he will return this weekend but the feeling is he should be ready to go against Virden if not tomorrow night.

Tomorrow nights match up will feature two of the most anemic powerplays in the league as both teams are clicking under 20%. OCN is last in the MJHL with the man advantage at 11.43% while Waywayseecappo is third last clicking at 16.98%.

As for the penalty kill the Blizzard boast numbers that are tops in the league tied with Virden at 84.62%, as for Waywayseecappo is tied for seventh at 77.50%.

The leading scorers for both teams have 25 points. OCN has both Tyler Grove (12G, 13A) and Wilson Dumais (9G, 16A) at that mark while Brett Pinkerton (6G, 19A) leads the Wolverines in scoring.

As for goaltending the Blizzard have a clear advantage as both goaltenders are top five statistically, Justin McDonald leads every major statistical category except for goals against average.

McDonald (13-4) boasts a GAA of 2.54, a save percentage of .929% and four shutouts. Blizzard backup Alex Henry (5-4) is not far behind his teammate with a GAA of 2.79 and a save percentage of .918%.

For Waywayseecappo Cory Simons (7-6) has seen the most action for the Wolverines and has a GAA of 3.14 and a save percentage of .908%. Riley Feser (2-6) is playing the role of backup this season and holds a GAA of 4.32 and a save percentage of .875.

The Blizzard have beaten the Wolverines in all three matchups between the two divisional rivals this season.

Both games this weekend will be broadcast on the air with the pre-game show kicking off at 7:15 both nights.

Stampeders Sanctioned for Playing With 26 Carded Players

The Swan Valley Stampeders have received a "severe sanction" in the words of MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis for what could be called an illegal roster.

The Stampeders played 10 games between the dates of October 25th to November 13th with 26 carded players which by some could be considered a severe roster violation. MJHL teams can only carry 25 carded players at this point of the season.

The Stampeders went 6-4 during that span beating the OCN Blizzard twice along with the Virden Oil Capitals, Winkler Flyers, Portage Terriers, and the Neepawa Natives.

In some Jr.A leagues that infraction of league rules would result in an automatic loss of points along with possible supplemental sanctions such as a $500 fine.

According to Davis, in the MJHL there is no set punishment for carrying more players than allowed by the league, so in essence the sanction is up to Davis' discretion.

Davis confirmed there would be no loss of points or changes to the standings as a result of the infraction.

Davis said the Stampeders have been sanctioned monetarily along with a sanction affecting their roster abilities for the rest of the season.

An anonymous source says the Stampeders have been fined $1,000 and lost 2 of their 45 player cards for the season (each team can only have 25 players carded at a time until December 1st when the number drops to 23, but can burn through 45 in a season.)

It seems that the Stampeders are lucky they don't play in the "other" leagues that would have taken away points for that infraction as they would move from 30 points on the season to 18.

The OCN Blizzard would have seen their numbers improve to 20-5-1 good for 41 points. The Stamps would then be second last in the Sher-Wood division with a record of 8-14-2 , only four points up on Neepawa who would gain two points.

Other teams that would gain two points are Winkler, Virden and Portage. Putting them at 20, 27, and 23 points on the season respectively.

Davis was willing to answer questions over the phone but did not want to record a statement.

** Note: I did have to readjust some numbers that were typo's. To be clear the Stampeders had 26 carded players, only allowed 25. Clearly this error justifies my crappy radio salary!**

Injury Update

Quick injury update.

Garick Gray required 8 stitches for the cut to his forehead on the hit to the head he received from Virden's Chase Wichellmann on Wednesday. Gray also sustained a concussion and will be out for a number of weeks.

As we all know now head injuries are fairly temperamental so there's no word on when he will be back. Could be a month, could be more, the best thing for Garick to do now is stay home, rest and just wait.

It's a substantial loss to the Blizzard, just as it seemed that they were going to be playing with a full roster shortly.

Garick leads the Blizzard in goals with 15 and was on a real tear of late as he was tied for the league lead in goals when he was knocked out.

As for Thomas Ward-Cardinal he could be back this weekend depending on how things go in practice this week. If not this weekend it will be very, very soon.

Grove Named Player of The Week

Tyler Grove is being recognized for his strong work of late.

Here's the release from the MJHL site:

Tyler Grove of the OCN Blizzard has been named the MJHL Player of the Week, ending November 18.

The veteran forward recorded nine points (6-3) over a four game span for the Blizzard who sit first in the Sher-Wood Division. Grove, 19, hails from Selkirk.

The runners up are 20 year old goaltender Landon Noel of the Swan Valley Stampeders and 16 year old goaltender Ty Edmonds of the Virden Oil Capitals.

Blizzard go 2-1 Down South

2-1 is good, but the Blizzard are still sour after spoiling at the very least a point against Winkler on Saturday.

The Blizzard beat the Selkirk Steelers 3-1 on Friday, followed by a 6-5 loss to Winkler on Saturday which saw Winkler take the lead with just 0:02 left on the clock in the third, the Blizzard beat the Winnipeg Blues 4-3 yesterday.

Thanks to CBC's and OCN's own Tiar Wilson for the photo of OCN Celebrating last night's victory. Stolen from her twitter account @tiarwilsonCBC

The Blizzard now sit at 18-7-1 on the season with 37 points. I had erroneously tweeted after the win last night that the Blizzard had the highest winning percentage in the league... that was true for about a half an hour until Dauphins win was in the books. Instead they are .02% behind Dauphin at 0.712%

Doing that made me go like this...

The Blizzard have a few players who are streaking right now.

Jack Petrino has 3 goals in his last 4 games.

Wilson Dumais has 10 points in his last 7 games.

Tyler Grove has 9 points in his last 4 games.

Here are Head Coach Jim Mollard's thoughts on the weekend.

Blizzard 7 - Oil Capitals 2

The next time Tyler Grove scores 4 goals and picks up one assist he has to throw in a moon walk... like Kovalev did with the Sens.

Again the Blizzard came out a little flat tonight as Virden controlled the tempo but they were able to head into the second period down by just a goal. Alex Henry kept the Blizzard in the game for the first 20 minutes.

The Blizzard took the lead in the second thanks to Grove and never looked back. One thing that OCN did tonight which they haven't done nearly enough this season is go for the kill. Up 4-1 heading into the third period the Blizzard didn't close up defensively but kept throttling the Oil Captials and widened the margin.

Killer instinct was there tonight.

Once OCN started to really skate Virden couldn't keep up, that was pretty clear.

It was a fun game for the fans to watch, I gave my neighbour a ticket to the game, he told me afterwards he won't miss a game again this year. They're fast, physical and talented and one heck of a hockey team.

Congratulations to Edward Bayer on his first MJHL goal, not the prettiest but it went in. Also to Grove and Brady Constant who picked up five points a piece.

Blizzard vs Oil Capitals (AGAIN!) Preview

The MJHL schedule maker needs some help in the creativity department. Tonight's matchup is the third of three straight against the Oil Capitals (8-8-5), the two teams also meet the weekend after next on a Brandon area road swing.

The OCN/ Virden game is one of three on tap for tonight in the MJHL as Dauphin is in Swan Valley and the Pistons host the Blues.

The Blizzard (15-6-1) have taken the last two matchups between these two clubs by scores of 6-3 (in Virden) and 4-1 (in OCN).

During the Murray GM Pre-Game show on Friday before OCN's 4-1 win over Virden at home Oil Capitals Head Coach Troy Leslie spoke about that Tuesday's loss to OCN in Virden by a 6-3 score saying "we got caught watching the skill level of these guys in the first period and that got us off our game."

The first period of that game on Friday was much better for the young Oil Capitals team, they skated with the Blizzard and held the play for extended periods of time, but a sloppy second by the Blizzard didn't convert into a lead for the Oil Capitals. Instead Garick Gray tied the game in the dying minutes of the second period and gave the Blizzard all the momentum heading into the third where OCN would take over.

The Blizzard are the better team on paper, but they can't take Virden lightly tonight. Their young lineup adjusted well to the raucous atmosphere on the GLMC on Friday and tonight being a Wednesday night matchup the crowd will be a little thinner.

Taking six of six points against a division rival is massive early on this season and comes with a crucial game tonight.

Neither the Blizzard nor the Oil Capitals have played since Friday.

Alex Henry (4-4) got the start on Friday and played better as the game wore on, he will get his second consecutive start tonight. While Kyler Beckett (4-9) played admirably for the Oil Capitals on Friday.

Young Oil Capitals goaltender Ty Edmonds (4-4) has returned from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia where he competed in the CJHL Top Prospects game for Team West and might make a return between the pipes this evening.

The OCN Blizzard come into tonight's matchup winners of their last three while the Oil Capitals have now lost 4 of their last 5.

Tonight's matchup will feature the leagues top goal scorers as Garick Gray (15 goals) and Richard Olson (14 goals) duke it out again.

The Oil Capitals traditionally boast a  very strong powerplay but they've been struggling in their last three games going 0/14. Their powerplay was ranked second in the MJHL before the two teams met for the first time last Wednesday clicking over 25%.

As of today their powerplay has dropped to fifth in the league at 22.68%. OCN's powerplay is dead last in the MJHL at just 11.49%.

Meanwhile OCN and Virden have the two top penalty killing stats in the league. Virden is first at 86.76% while OCN sits at 83.05%.

Tonight should be another exciting one at the GLMC. It also marks the return of Head Coach Jim Mollard behind the OCN bench.

Puck drop is at 7:00PM. Neither tonight's game nor any of this weekend's games on the road will be broadcast, we will be back on the air on Friday November 23rd in Waywayseecappo.

I will try and keep you all updated as much as possible throughout the weekend. I will be in Thompson and will have a chance to catch Saturday's NorMan Northstars game.

Audio Highlights from Nov 9

Here are the audio highlights from Friday's 4-1 win over Virden.

Dauphin Awarded the 2014 WCC

The City of Dauphin and the Dauphin Kings have been awarded the 2014 Western Canada Cup.

You can read more here on Christian Laughland's blog (the voice of the Dauphin Kings on 730 CKDM)

Dumais Runner Up for POW

Wilson Dumais played the three best games I've seen him play so far and he's been rewarded.

Dumais hasn't taken a penalty in his last three games and the increase in his impact on the game since then has been immeasurable.

Dumais has 2 goals and 5 assists in his last three games, all of them wins for the OCN Blizzard.

The winner was Swan Valley's defender Garrett Johnston and the other runner up was Selkirk's Justin Derlago.

Perks Listed by Dauphin

A few of you have been commenting about it on other entries.

Yes Tim Perks was listed by Dauphin on Thursday. Derek Fontaine didn't find out until Saturday.

Perks was going to join the club on a try out and if the Blizzard liked him would have added him to their 50 man list.

Perks will be the Kings 9th import player.

Fontaine tells me there will be others like him as NHL'ers continue to go overseas to play young players trickle down.

Any more moves I will let you know here.

OCN 4 - Virden 1

Welcome Back Kolton... or Kotter.

One was a teacher, the other a hockey player. All the same right?

Kolton Baptiste had one heck of a comeback game tonight.

Baptiste intimidated physically and laid the body on from his first shift. He scored in the third period off a turnover just inside the line and got a standing ovation from the GLMC faithful.

Here's an interview with Kolton after tonight's game. The players love having him back, he's a good guy in the room.

The first period was some great hockey, the Oil Capitals came out firing and played the Blizzard very very well. The second period was sloppier and OCN couldn't get their jump going as usual but in the third period Wilson Dumais scored a beauty to put the Blizzard up by 1.

Garick Gray would add an empty netter his 15th of the year and wrestle the league goal scoring title away from Virden's Richard Olson in the dying seconds of the game.

The Blizzard's physical play wore out the Oil Capitals by the third period and their offense came alive thanks to the Gray, Valiquette and Dumais line. Again Dumais had a tremendous game and stayed out of the box for the third game in a row.

The Blizzard move to 15-6-1 on the season and pick up their 31st point of the season. They face Virden again on Wednesday. We won't be broadcasting that game nor any games from the upcoming swing to the Winnipeg area next weekend. We'll be back on the air with the Brandon road trip in 2 weeks!

Here is Derek Fontaine's interview from the first intermission. Again we chat about Baptiste and Chief as well as Tim Perks.

Chief was up in the press box tonight, a big smile on his face, certainly happy to rejoin the club.

Preview: Blizzard vs Oil Capitals

First an injury update.

Tyler Grove returns to the lineup tonight. Thomas Ward-Cardinal is still about a week away, while Taylor Santorelli about 4-6 weeks away.

The Blizzard (14-6-1) host the Oil Capitals (8-7-5) in the second of three straight games against the MJHL's newest club. OCN won the inaugural matchup on Tuesday 6-3. A solid road game.

The Oil Caps are young and got even younger trading away one of their three twenty year olds in Gaudet to Dauphin. They now have only two '92 born players on their roster.

It's a young team that can be intimidated and I'm sure the atmosphere at the GLMC will give the Blizzard an advantage.

HOW THEY MATCH UP:

OCN: 72
VIR: 62

Goals Against:

OCN: 56
VIR: 70

Last 10:

Northern Weekend Roundup

Better late then never, been a busy week so far.

NorMan Northstars

The Norman Northstars were able to come away with 2 out of a possible 4 points against the Yellowhead Chiefs this weekend. They dropped the first game 6-4, Blizzard prospect Lodie Ipeelie picked up two goals and an assist.

The Northstars came back with a win in the second game in shootouts thanks to a beauty by Blizzard prospect Brenden Barron. Ipeelie picked up a goal and two assists in that game as the Northstars were outshot 34-33.

They sit with a 4-8 record on the year good for second last in the East division.
----
NorMan Wild

The Norman Wild Picked up their first 2 points of the season on Saturday. They beat the Eastman Selects 6-3,but lost the second game Sunday morning 5-3. the wild go on the road this weekend with three games starting Friday night against the same Eastman Selects.
----
OCN Storm

The OCN Storm don't seem to be getting any better as the season progresses. They lost by 19-1 score last night to the St.Malo Warriors and fall to 0-13 on the season. The Storm also suffered three other losses this weekend by scores of 9-6 to Norway House, 8-0 to Ste. Rose and 8-1 to Arborg.

93 F - Tim Perks to try out with Blizzard

*EDIT: The OCN Blizzard have a player coming to try out on Monday and it looks like he will be a dandy.

Here are his vitals and scoring info.

Tim Perks - 1993-05-20
Birthplace: Oxford, MI, USA
Age: 19
Position: F
Height: 6'2
Weight: 185lbs

I think this could be a real solid pickup for the team. The kid played 9 game and scored 3 goals in the third highest pro division in Sweden.

He's big and I figure he can score.

Apparently a few teams from the NAHL wanted him too. His agent Andruw Bourgeouis out of Brandon (also represents Dusik and Northtars forward Brendan Barron) says he decided to come to Manitoba.

Perks left Sweden early this week and has been back home in the US.

I'm told his mother is booking his flight right now and he's expected in Manitoba on Monday.

This is better than a trade, don't give anything up and pick up a kid who's been playing in a great Swedish hockey system.

Perks was at this year's Windsor Spitfires camp and hopes to receive an NCAA scholarship, so I assume he'll play out the rest of his junior career in Jr.A

OCN 6 - Virden 3

Ray Walker the voice of the Virden Oil Capitals called it a "perfect road game."

The Blizzard started strong, silenced the reported crowd of 1000 people and took the wind out of the sails of the Oil Capitals.

The second period was tough as OCN battled bad bounces and mental errors leading to odd man rushes deep in the defensive zone.

In the third the Blizzard did a good job of controlling play and keeping things tight defensively.

I don't think Garick Gray has scored a pretty goal all year, again tonight popping in a rebound off the side of the goal. But he and the Blizzard will take them how they come.

TJ Constant's penalty shot marker was his 50th in his career as an OCN Blizzard.

Unfortunately due to equipment malfunctions I wasn't able to interview Clay DeBray during the post game.

So here are his thoughts after last night's game.

Interview with Fontaine

Please forgive the crappy audio for the first few seconds.

Online streaming

Hi folks,

I understand the online stream is down. We're working on it back at the station to get things going again. No promises that it will be back online tonight.

Very sorry about the technical difficulties.

I know that Ray from bigfm is doing the game for the Oil Caps. You can stream there at bigfm.ca.

Lineup vs Virden

A few changes to the Blizzard roster today.

As previously mentioned Chief and Baptiste will return to OCN tomorrow. Also Dusik has been dealt to Dauphin for futures.

Here is tonight's lineup...

Forwards

Dumais / Valiquette / Gray
Cardinal / TJ Constant / Brady Constant
Sharp / Bayer / Petrino
Lathlin / Cameron / Swampy

Defense

Elmes / Fontaine
Bruyere / Cochrane
Kavanaugh / Robak

Goalies

McDonald - Starter
Henry - Backup

I will be chatting with Derek Fontaine during the OCN Shell First intermission. For those who can't listen the interview will be posted here after the game.

Pre-Game at 7:15 - Puck Drop 7:30

Baptiste and Chief to return

The Blizzard have re-acquired the rights to D/F Kolton Baptiste from the Lloydminster Bobcats. Along with Baptiste, Kirk Chief will be making his return to the Blizzard.

Baptiste was traded to Lloydminster on October 16th for Jack Petrino and Parker Sharp.

Baptiste will bring back some depth at forward as will Chief as the Blizzard seem to have their shutdown unit intact once again. Personally I think Parker Sharp would be a good fit there with those two.

Baptiste had been released by Lloydminster about one week ago.

They are expected back in town today or tomorrow and might be available for Friday's game versus Virden.

Saturday Audio Highlights

Here are the audio highlights from Saturday's broadcast.

OCN Blues 8 - The Pas Huskies 7

Had the chance to watch an exhibition game at the Roy H Johnston arena featuring an exhibition game between OCN and The Pas' Novice teams.

It was a great back and forth game with plenty of scoring.

It's always nice to go back and watch minor hockey, when the kids just play to play. I think sometimes we all forget that this is just a game.

Was great to watch kids fall, trip and slide their way across the ice all the while a gigantic smile from ear to ear.

I remember the game being faster at that age for some reason... haha. As a goalie I always hated that one kid on every team who could lift the puck....

Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought game!

Some good hockey players on both sides of the Saskatchewan river!

I think Derek Fontaine should watch a few games for his auto-protects for the 2017 MJHL entry draft!

Enjoy your Sunday!

McDonald named MGEU Goaltender Of The Month

Turtleford Saskatchewan's Justin McDonald received high praise from the MJHL this week being named the MGEU goaltender of the month for October.

The 20-year old posted a 6-2 record with a 2.63 GAA and .922 sv% along with two shutouts.

McDonald spent two tough years with the Kindersley Klippers of the SJHL and moved over to OCN due to his connection with Clay DeBray who coached him in midget AAA.

The Blizzard are happy to have him and he's certainly happy to be here.

McDonald leads all starters in the MJHL in GAA with 2.31 and a .935 sv% and he picked up his fourth shutout of the season last night as well. His 10 wins also are tops in the league.

Dauphins Guillaume Naud was named the RBC player of the month, Wayway's David Haaf named the Sher-wood defensemen of the month and Winkler's Tristan Keck named rookie of the month.

Blizzard 4 - Natives 0

Welcome back.

The Blizzard played a strong team game, everyone contributed and after killing off a SEVEN minute long penalty courtesy of Bradley Swampy OCN exploded for three goals in the second period and a fourth goal in the third period.

Garick Gray had another strong game with a hat-trick and an assist. He now has 11 points in his last eight games and is tied for the league goal scoring lead with 12 goals.

Wilson Dumais had his best game in an OCN jersey, he played smart and physical but didn't chase or make hits behind the play, didn't run people and didn't run his mouth at the ref.  He's a dominating force when he plays like he did tonight, it took three Neepawa players to knock him off the puck, opens up tons of space on the ice.

Ralph Cochrane had another strong game, again as always. The usual characters were themselves.

Dusik played good two way hockey, Cameron was strong on the forecheck.

Petrino, Sharp and Bayer created opportunities offensively and were solid defensively.

McDonald was perfect for the fourth time this season.

It was a great game, the fans were fantastic. Big props to the dancing man in section D.

Cory Koop kept Neepawa in it for the first 20, but couldn't stop the onslaught from OCN's offensive.

Pitre Tire Three Stars:

1. Garick Gray (3G, 1A)
2. Wilson Dumais (1G, 2A)
3. Justin McDonald (16/16 saves - shutout)

Honourable Mention:

Cory Koop (43/47 saves)

Northern Building Supply Hardest Working Player:

Ralph Cochrane.

The Blizzard head to Virden on Tuesday for the first of three straight games against the Oil Capitals.

Tuesday's game will be broadcast.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Blizzard vs Natives - Preview + Lineup

The OCN Blizzard (12-6-1) and Neepawa Natives (5-10-1) have one thing in common, both teams are on a three game losing skid.

The Blizzard host the leagues worst team tonight. You would hope that it's a sure two points in the bank but the way things have been going of late that probably won't be the case.

OCN is coming off a 5-2 loss to Portage last night while Neepawa got shutout 4-0 to the steaming Stampeders.

The Blizzard need to play smart hockey, put the effort in and they should win, they are the more talented team but hard work beats talent.

How They Matchup:

Goals For:

OCN: 62
NEP: 36

Goals Against:

OCN: 53
NEP: 59

Power Play:

OCN: 16/91 (17.58% / 11th)
NEP: 8/77 (10.39% / 8th)

Penalty Kill:

OCN: 187/207 (81.31% / 5th)
NEP: 55/78 (75.34% / 10th)

Tonight's lineup for OCN:

Goalies

McDonald - Starter
Henry - Backup

Defense

Elmes / Dusik
Bruyere / Cochrane
Kavanaugh / Robak

Forwards

Dumais / Valiquette / Gray
Cardinal / TJ Constant / Brady Constant
Sharp / Bayer / Petrino
Lathlin / Cameron / Swampy

Scratches:

Ward-Cardinal - INJ
Santorelli - INJ
Grove - INJ
MacInnis
Fontaine

TJ has been having a tough go since his return from injury and has been bumped down to the second line, it`s nice to see someone who works as hard as Garick get a crack at that top unit.

Puck drop is at 7PM, pre-game at 6:45

Blizzard 2 - Terriers 5

Ouch.

That one hurt, the Blizzard kept it close but for the second night in a row too many guys were coasting. Again the only line that played was the one with Gray on it, Elmes on the back end was a stud again.

Those two along with MacDonald are the heart and soul of this team, and it hurts to watch them have to carry the team.

Cochrane played well also I thought, again Petrino and Sharp gave energy. It just seems like for the last five games the Blizzard start strong but can't finish, they've been snake bitten... badly.

McDonald had no help tonight.

PK is a mess, the PP was about as alive as the Zombie walk a few weeks back.

The players just seemingly have stopped playing.

Here's a post game interview with Clay DeBray.

Blizzard Lineup vs Portage

Goalies

McDonald - Starter
Henry - Backup

Elmes / Dusik
Bruyere / Cochrane
Robak / Kavanaugh

Tyler Grove - INJ
Thomas Ward-Cardinal - INJ
Taylor Santorelli - INJ
Brady Constant

Here's a lighthearted pregame interview with Gray.

Game Preview: Blizzard vs Portage

The Blizzard have handled the defending champs with relative ease this season and can run a perfect 4-0 in their season series versus Portage with a win tonight.

The Blizzard are coming off two loses to the Swan Valley Stampeders by scores of 6-3 each time. Those losses are the first back to back for the Blizzard this season.

Ke-Na-Now Centre in Wabowden
Kajon McKay makes his only trip to the North this season both he and Blizzard forward  Eddie Bayer spent plenty of time there (pic left) as youngsters. The Ke-Na-Now Centre in Wabowden.

McKay is a 20 year old and could be moved by the Terriers this year if they fall out of the race. I think a large number of Blizzard fans hope they can see him playing out of the GLMC later this year.

The Blizzard have dominated the Terriers this year with a pair of blowout wins in Portage and a shootout winner at the MJHL Showcase.

I would expect that Portage doesn't want to get swept, should be another tough test at home tonight. We'll see which Blizzard show up... as DeBray put it the "smart tough or stupid tough".

HOW THEY MATCHUP:

Records:

OCN: 12-5-1 (1st SHWD)
PTG: 7-5-1 (3rd ADDN)

Goals For:

OCN: 60
