Tonight's Lineup vs Portage

Here is tonight's lineup vs the defending and undefeated (3-0) MJHL champions Portage Terriers.

Forwards

15 Dumais / 19 TJ Constant / 12 Brady Constant
16 Grove / 11 Valiquette / 25 Gray
24 Chief / 21 Baptiste / 10 Cardinal
8 Cameron / 9 Lathlin / 27 Gamblin

Defense

7 Bruyere / 17 Cochrane
4 Elmes / 5 Ward-Cardinal
3 Dusik / 20 Kavanaugh

Goaltenders

30 McDonald
33 Henry

McDonald gets the start in the rotation of the ever fantastic goaltenders.

The Terriers are coming off a 4-3 win over the Neepawa Natives on Friday.

Should be a real test tonight, either you go 4-2 or 5-1 after this trip and stay at the top of the league.

Both Dumais and Valiquette are in the lineup and if goaltending continues the way it has been it should be an entertaining game.

Puck drop at 6:30 - pregame at 6:15.

Pistons 4 - Blizzard 1 ... About Last Night

Last night was a tough one for OCN, Dumais and Valiquette out due to sickness and injury respectively. Right off the hop the Blizzard ran into injury trouble and the newly formed top two lines didn't get much playing time together in the first.

By the time the first period was over the score was 3-0.

Alex Henry was outstanding again, none of the four goals were his fault.

The Pistons did an excellent job of clogging up the middle of the ice and forcing OCN to the outside, when they would get there any shot the Blizzard would take out wide would hit a stick or a leg.

Tough loss for the Blizzard allowing 2 PP goals last night.

They'll have to regroup for tonight as they face Portage.

Pitre Tire Three stars:

1. Dennis Bosc (2G, 1A)
2. Alex Henry (52 saves)
3. Tyler Grove (1A)

Northern Building Supply Hardest Working Player:

Tyler Grove

The Pistons are coming off a tough lost last night that saw them lose a 1 goal lead in the first as they let Selkirk score three in the second period. With a record of 4-0 teams will start taking aim at OCN  as they want to be the ones who ruin perfection.

Should be another tough one tonight.

Henry gets the start after a spectacular performance by McDonald, the coaching staff will rotate goalies until one of them drops the ball.

4 wins is lucky, 5 is a streak.

Puck drop at 7:30 tonight, pre-game show at 7:15. Tune in!

Blizzard 3 Flyers 2 - OT... About Last Night

Well, a long road trip and overtime left this broadcaster beat like a rented mule. Sorry I didn't upload anything last night, passed out as soon as I walked into the hotel room.

It was a character road win by OCN last night. A long day on the bus and the Blizzard battled through it, in large part thanks to Justin McDonald who made 17 saves in the first period. Unfortunately Tim Kavanaugh put the puck in his own net and gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Kolton Baptiste scored in his second straight game this time the Blizzards first powerplay goal of the season to tie things up at one.

Elmes scored to put the Blizzard up by one then it was the parade to the penalty box in the third period and when Bradley Swamp took the teams fifth penalty of the game Tanner Jago tied things up for the Flyers on his off wing on a great one timer.

In overtime TJ Constant got a breakaway feed from Bruyere and makes a beautiful deke and slides the puck in between the legs of Oswald for the OT winner.

After the first half of the game it was the most exciting game I've seen all season.

Justin McDonald was lights out, he made 98 saves before allowing his first goal of the season.

I thought that the Chief, Baptiste, Cardinal line played very well and Dusik and Kavanaugh were excellent tonight for the Blizzard.

Here is how the scoring broke down...

1st Period

WKR 7:51 - Jago (2) - Assist: Patchett, Collins (Kavanaugh Own Goal)

2nd Period

OCN 1:23 PP - Baptiste (3) - Assist: Cochrane, McDonald

3rd Period

OCN 3:04 - Elmes (1) - Assist: Ward-Cardinal, Cardinal

Lineup vs Winkler

First game of a three game road trip tonight, kicking things off with the Winkler Flyers who are (0-3) on the season and sit last in the Addison Division.

Here are the lines for OCN tonight:

BLIZZARD

Goaltenders

30 - McDonald (Starter)
33- Henry

Defensemen

4 Elmes/ 5 Ward-Cardinal
7 Bruyere/ 17 Cochrane
3 Dusik/ 20 Kavanaugh

Forwards

15 Dumais/ 19 TJ Constant/ 12 Brady Constant
16 Grove/ 11 Valiquette/ 25 Gray
24 Chief / 21 Baptiste / 10 Cardinal
28 Swampy / 23 Santorelli / 6 Bayer

Scratches

Fontaine
Lathlin
MacInnis
Cameron
Gamblin

Here is the lineup for Winkler in numerical order.

1- Peters (G)
4 - Toneff
9 - Mullin
10 - Stoddart
12 - Jago
13- Reinbolt
14- Crist
15- Keck
16- Neduzak
17- Collins
18- Swerdyliak
19- Patchett
20- Butler
21- Faux
22- Klassen
23- Micflikier
24- Jorgensen
26- Leonzio
27- Stoesz
30- Oswald (G)

Not sure who will start for Winkler but I imagine it will be Peters.

Justin McDonald gets his second career start in a Blizzard uniform, his first went very well making 41 saves for a shutout in a 3-0 Blizzard win over the Stampeders last Saturday.

The Flyers are off to a terrible start this year, I would expect them to come out very hard looking for their first win at home tonight.

How They Matchup:

Overall Record: OCN (3-0) / Winkler (0-3)
Goals For: OCN (13) / Winkler (7)
Goals Against: OCN (4) / Winkler (15)
Powerplay: OCN (0/9 - 0%) / Winkler (1/9 - 11.11%)
Penalty Kill: OCN (15/15 - 100%) / Winkler (3/16 - 81.25%)
Shorthanded Goals For: OCN (2) / Winkler (0)
Shorthanded Goals Against: OCN (0) / Winkler (0)

Statistically OCN should win against any team with those numbers only three games into the season, but it's only the fourth game tonight and VERY early. Should be an exciting game.

Pre-Game is at 7:15 puckdrop at 7:30.

Where They Stand 1

This is a new segment that I'm going to try and complete every week on Wednesdays. Essentially what it's going to be is a look at where the Blizzard stand league wide in a variety of statistical categories....

Where they stand.... Standings Overall #1

The Blizzard are first in the MJHL after tonight's win based on goal differential over the Winnipeg Blues (3-0)

Where they stand.... Standings Sher-Wood #1

Since they are first in the league... they are clearly first in their division as well. The Virden Oil Capitals (2-0-1) are right on their tails with five points followed by Dauphin (1-1), Neepawa (1-1), Waywayseecappo (0-2-1), and Swan Valley (0-2)

Where they stand.... Goals for Overall #2 (13GF)

The Winnipeg Blues have scored one more goal per game than OCN has (3 goals extra) but the Blizzard are in a comfortable place in second overall. The Virden Oil Capitals have the third most goals in the league with 11, followed by Selkirk (9), and Waywayseecappo (9). The Swan Valley Stampeders have scored the fewest goals in the league with just 2.

Where they stand.... Goals Against Overall #1 (4GA)

The Blizzard, through the first three games of the season have the best defense statistically in the league. Dauphin, Portage and Steinbach have all allowed just one goal more than OCN on the season.

Where they stand.... Goal Differential #1 (+9)

The Blizzard have the best goal differential in the league, which is what slots them ahead of the Blues in the overall league standings. The Blues have a differential of (+8)followed by Virden and Portage (+2). The Winkler Flyers have the worst goal differential in the league at (-8)

Where they stand.... Powerplay #4 (0%, 0/9)

You might be asking yourself...#4??? Only three teams have scored on the powerplay this season. The Virden Oil Capitals (62.50%) have been deadly early on going 5/8 and sit first in the league, followed by Neepawa (18.75) 3/16, and Selkirk (9.09%) 1/11. The rest of the teams in the league are 0 for.

Where they stand.... Penalty Kill #1 (100%, 15/15)

The OCN Blizzard stand atop the Penalty Kill rankings over two other 100% teams (Portage, Swan Valley) the Blizzard place first as they've killed off at least 10 more penalties than those two teams. The worst Penalty Kill belongs to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines (61.50%, 8/13)

Where they stand.... Shorthanded Goals For #1 (2G)

The Blizzard and Winnipeg Blues (1) are the only two teams who have scored shorthanded.

Where they stand.... Shorthanded Goals Against #1 (0G)

Only three teams have allowed a shorthanded goal against, and all teams have allowed just one (Selkirk, Swan Valley, Waywayseecappo).

Where they are best (OCN's top ranking in any given statistic).... Shorthanded Goals Against, Shorthanded Goals For, Penalty Kill, Goal Differential, Goals Against Overall, Standings Overall, Standings Sher-wood - #1

Where they are worst (OCN's lowest ranking in any given statistic).... Powerplay - #4

*Expect these to change DRASTICALLY next week. As some teams have still only played two games, and in cases like Swan Valley both were against the same team.

-Brad-

Blizzard 5 - Wolverines 2

Perfect --- that is the OCN Blizzards record after three games a perfect 3-0.

I mentioned in my quick pre-game posting of the rosters that the game would be tighter than most would expect, for the first 20 minutes it was.

The Wolverines were playing back well and keeping their positions, the Blizzard had a hard time breaking through the neutral zone trap and it seemed to be frustrating the Blizzard.

Waywayseecappo scored the first goal of the game early on off a bad defensive collapse by the Blizzard. Multiple times in the first period and then sporadically throughout the rest of the game OCN completely broke down defensively. It's something that they will have to work on... and I interviewed Head Coach Jim Mollard after the game, he agrees that the defense needs some work.

They were lucky that Alex Henry stood on his head again tonight.

This team can score, and in bunches. Once they learn how to tighten up defensively they will be very, very scary.

Players who stood out tonight - Elmes, Dumais, TJ Constant, Gray, Kavanaugh, Henry, Cochrane. Everyone played a good game but those seven were very impressive.

The captain had a big night, and I chatted with him after the win as well.

Here is how the scoring broke down.

Period 1

WAYWAY 4:02- Cody Koskimaki (1) - Assists; Brett Lafond
OCN 15:14 - TJ Constant (1) - Assists; Brady Constant and Wilson Dumais

Period 2

OCN 2:36 - Tyler Grove (2) - Assists; Garick Gray and Ralph Cochrane
OCN 5:41 (SH) - Nathan Bruyere (2) - Assists; Ralph Cochrane and Kirk Chief
OCN 15:38 - Kolton Baptiste (1) - Asissts; Darien Cardinal
WAYWAY 18:57 - Jean-Michel Neud - Assists; Robert Briem and Dylan Bowerman

Period 3

OCN  6:23 - TJ Constant (2) - Assists; Tim Kavanaugh

Shots

OCN - 43
WAYWAY - 41

Some might say that I'm nitpicking on the defensive coverage tonight especially since they only allowed two goals and won by three. I feel it's fair considering this teams goal of a championship this year, and I think that goal is valid and well placed in reality. However you can't run and gun against every team, there will be times that the Blizzard will have to lock down the Winnipeg Blues come to mind. Once they sort things out defensively they will be a serious contender in this league. I expect a lot from this team, and we all should because they're very good.

It's early, but this is a great start.

Team bus leaves early Friday morning, this weekend is the real test.

Blizz 3 - Stamps 0 / About Last Night...

The strength of this team is supposed to lie in its six veteran defenders and last night it did.

The Blizzard D controlled the tempo of the game, Josh Elmes made one heck of a pass to Wilson Dumais for his first as a Blizzard and they kept the 3/4 of the shots to the outside.

Justin McDonald looked fantastic in his Blizzard debut, making 43 saves for a shutout. McDonald also played the puck quite well.

The Chief, Baptiste & Cardinal line looked fantastic once again.

Brady Constant looked a little behind playing with TJ Constant and Wilson Dumais, but he is just returning from injury.

Grove, Valiquette & Gray looked fantastic as well... they are the best line on the team right now. Take care of their own end first, then aggressive on the forecheck and usually cause the turnover and they have the offensive skill to take advantage.

Here is how the scoring broke down

1st Period

OCN 4:02 -  Wilson Dumais - Assist: Josh Elmes, Thomas Ward-Cardinal
OCN 7:52-   Grant Valiquette - Assist: Taylor Santorellis, Thomas Ward-Cardinal

2nd Period

None

3rd Period

OCN 17:22 - Nathan Bruyere - Assist: Kolton Baptiste, Kirk Chief

Pitre Tire Game Stars

1. Justin McDonald
2. Josh Elmes
3. Tyler Grove

Northern Building Supply Hardest Working Player

Word around the league is that Swan Valley is supposed to be one of the stronger teams this year... if so the Blizzard look pretty good. Starting off the season with back to back wins in dominating fashion over your rivals is always a bonus.

The Blizzard are tied with the Virden Oil Capitals for first in the SherWood Division.

They play Waywayseecappo on Wednesday at home.

Then off to Winkler for a three game swing against the Flyers, Terriers, and Pistons. That road series will be the real test for this team. If they come out of that series with four points I think the Blizz will start striking fear into opponents when they see OCN on their schedule.

About Last Night...

Last night the home town fans were treated to a show. A 5-2 win by the Blizzard, not a blow out but a spectacular win considering they held off the Stampeders and never really gave away the momentum after the first goal.

The Blizzard played the style that the coaching staff has been preaching about, agressive, fast and hard hitting hockey.

Head Coach Jim Mollard has told me many times that 5 on 5 he doesn't think there is a team that can skate with OCN -- after last night you would have to agree with him.

It is just one win, in a long schedule, but for an opening night game at home it was a statement game.

The Blizzard rolled all four lines, the top three getting the lions share of scoring chances and the fourth line put pressure on the puck and didn't look outmatched when on against the Stamps Valentino line.

Tim Kavanaugh looked very good, he's a great skater, works his edges very well.

Brendan Dusik was invisible (in a good way), until he bashed Valentino over the head with his stick.... then he was invisible for a little longer while sitting in the box.

I think, and hope that Blizzard fans can expect this level and style of play from OCN all season. This is a team of hard workers, with the skill to compliment the compete level.

The most impressive line for me last night was Gray, Grove and Valiquette. Speed, skill and physicality in abundance. If they aren't, they're going to be pretty damn close to the best second line in the league.

Chief, Baptiste and Cardinal played very well also.

This team can score with three lines --- that is depth, that is the depth needed to be considered an elite team.

Alex Henry impressive, starts off the season with a 0.935 sv% and looked great on a couple of chances, the Blizzard did a good job of keeping most shots to the outside.

And for those of you at the game I don't think I need to say what Santorelli did. The kid never stops working and it paid off for him last night.

Should be an entertaining night in Swan this evening.

**BLIZZARD TRADE**

The OCN Blizzard also completed a trade earlier today acquiring F Matt Gamblin (94) from the Neepawa Natives for futures.

Gamblin is expected to bring additional toughness to the lineup when needed, he'll be a scrapper. Apparently he spent a considerable part of his childhood just North of here in Cranberry Portage.

Stagg, Zulyniak Leave... Ward-Cardinal Returns

Well, interesting enough day at the Blizzard office.

Two players decided to leave, Daniel Stagg decided that returning to play Junior B in Lundar is best for him.

While Cody Zulyniak saw where he was most likely to fit on this team (that's on the fringe) and decided to leave as well.

Also, it seems that Thomas Ward-Cardinal will be making a return. He should be in town tomorrow night. Not sure if he will play in the home opener on Friday, but it looks like for now the team and Ward-Cardinal will try to hash things out and make it work.

Will have more tomorrow.

Opening Night Lineup & Fontaine, Mollard Talk

Here is the opening night lineup for Friday,

G

Starter- Alex Henry
Backup - Justin McDonald

D

First Pair - Bruyere/ Cochrane
Second Pair- Elmes/ Kavanaugh
Third Pair - Dusik/ Fontaine

F

First Line - Dumais/ TJ Constant/ Cameron
Second Line - Grove/ Valiquette/ Gray
Third Line - Chief/  Baptiste/ Cardinal
Fourth Line- Lathlin/ Santorelli/ Swampy

Scratched - Macinnis, Bayer, Zulyniak, Stagg
Injured- Brady Constant, Mitchell Backhouse

* My apologies to Daniel Stagg, I originally left him off the scratched list. Just an error on my part.

* Of course this lineup is good barring injuries, illness, family emergencies or just change of heart from the coaches.

You may be wondering who Fontaine is , that's Zach Fontaine, a '93 born. Apparently he had a great fight last night in Neepawa.

Derek is still trying to make a move for a replacement for Ward-Cardinal, in that case Fontaine would stick around as a #7 D-Man.

There may also be another deal in the works to bring in another top four d-man not involving Ward-Cardinal. The Blizzard are just waiting to see how the chips fall.

Here is an interview with Derek Fontaine.

Here is an interview with Jim Mollard.

Blizzard Win 7-0 Over Neepawa

The OCN Blizzard wrapped up the exhibition portion of their season with a 7-0 whopping of the Neepawa Natives.

Here is how the scoring broke down.

1st period

0:18- Matthew Cameron, Assist - TJ Constant,  Wilson Dumais

2nd period

8:21- Eddie Bayer, Assist - TJ Constant, Tyler Santorelli
15:50- Wilson Dumais, Assist - Kolton Baptiste, Darian Cardinal

3rd period

0:17- Wilson Dumais, Assist - Ralph Cochrane, TJ Constant
1:49- Darian Cardinal, Assist - Grant Valiquette, Tyler Grove
12:06- Ralph Cochrane, Unassisted
17:51-  TJ Constant, Assist - Josh Elmes, Kirk Chief

Shots

OCN - 60
Neepawa - 42

Clearly TJ Constant had a good night, as did Wilson Dumais.

I think after a 42 save shutout Alex Henry will be between the pipes on Friday for the season and home opener, I can imagine he will also be given the starters role.

I'll try and grab an interview tomorrow with someone, they'll be getting back in the early morning so I don't think it will be until later.

Blizzard close out the pre-season with a 5-3 record.

I'm looking forward to the home opener on Friday!

Blizzard Win Big In Sioux Lookout But Lose Ward-Cardinal

About Last Night... Flin Flon 5 - OCN 4

Well,

Apparently Clay DeBray is now going viral on the internet. His great "cat in the hat" interview we did a few weeks ago got picked up by the score.

http://blogs.thescore.com/nhl/2012/09/12/junior-hockey-coach-gives-your-new-favourite-interview-ever/

On to last night.

Tough game for OCN, 10 penalties against, not all of them warranted. When the play was 5 vs 5 Flin Flon had a very hard time containing the size and speed of the Blizzard. Again, this team looks pretty solid heading into the tail end of the exhibition season.

Alex Henry looked spectacular, made a great split save on his keister off a scramble in front. He's calm and has very good rebound control. Seems like he slows the game down. Although he isn't a big goaltender he plays out and cuts down the angles very well.

Brendan Dusik wasn't very noticeable, which is good for a stay at home defender. I'm sure we'll see his game become more physical as he gets back into game action.

Here are last night's post game comments from Head Coach Jim Mollard.

The Blizzard are in Sioux Lookout tomorrow, Dryden Friday and Neepawa on Sunday.

Our next broadcast will be Friday September 21st for the home opener versus Swan Valley.

Blizzard Fall 5-4 in Flin Flon

Just a quick recap, full "About Last Night..." To come tomorrow.

First of all, I want to apologize for us going off air, nothing we could have controlled as we use VOIP phones at the station and they take about 15 minutes to restart, but still not wanted.

Second, hope you all enjoyed the broadcast tonight.

A few quick notes-

* Derek Fontaine mentioned during the second intermission that the Blizzard have come to an agreement with another team regarding another defencemen to replace Joey Sutherland. Fontaine says the player is from out of province. Once the trade is confirmed and I have all the final details I will pass them along to you, should be done by Thursday the latest.

* I thought Alex Henry looked great, as did Jim Mollard. Hopefully he can step in and solidify the goaltending position.

* Obviously penalties killed the Blizzard tonight, 10 in total. Some warranted, some not so much.

I did get a post game with Jim Mollard on my recorder, but soundcloud is giving me trouble, and I figure since I'm battling a cold I won't sit here and battle with soundcloud all night. I'll upload it tomorrow with About Last Night...

That's it for tonight, more to come tomorrow.

About Last Night... Hawks 5 - Blizz 1

What did we learn about last night's 5-1 loss at the hands of the Nipawin Hawks? Well #1 don't get to the rink three and a half hours before the game. This team  Too much downtime and the players didn't have their legs, not much skating last night.

Most of the Blizzard's problems occurred in their own defensive end, too many time they got caught with four or even all five guys below the has marks trying to defend. The problem? Leaves the high slot wide open and it makes Justin McDonalds job much more difficult to track the puck.

Turnovers in the high slot was a problem as well, multiple times the Blizzard were unable to breakout of their own zone, they looked very disorganized.

All around it was a poor effort in the defensive end.

The Blizz also got away from their physical play, which is supposed to be the trade mark of this big team.

Undisciplined play led to too many penalties, something the coaching staff will have to work on.

Some of the positives?

Grove, Gray & Valiquette looked very good together. Valiquette and Grove can both fly and dish the puck while Gray is great at retrieving the puck.

Wilson Dumais looked strong again, although his wild side did show.

Thomas Ward-Cardinal looked great again, the guy can shoot, pass and skate with the best of them in this league.

Justin McDonald was the victim of a porous defense in making 22 saves, two goals were tip ins and several were scrambles. All around he looked better than he has in his last few outings.

This team has potential, but the coaching staff has lots of work to do to get the compete level of this team up and get everyone on the same page.

The Blizzard are in Flin Flon on Tuesday and we'll have that game for you live on CJ1240.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, speak to you on Tuesday!

OCN Blizzard Name Captain & Assistants

Before today's practice Head Coach Jim Mollard named his captain and three assistants.

The captain for the 2012-2013 and most likely 2013-2014 season is TJ Constant. Constant will have Wilson Dumais, Thomas Ward-Cardinal and Josh Elmes as his assistants this season.

Here is an interview with the new captain.

Interview With OCN Storm GM Gatlin Church

Here's an interview with OCN Storm GM Gatlin Church regarding their first signing in franchise history.

Blizzard 5-4 OT Win Over Neepawa

The OCN Blizzard improved their exhibition season record to 2-1 with a 5-4 overtime win over the Neepawa Natives.

Once again Grant Valiquette stood out, the kid is going to be a stud.

Kamil Prezpiorka looked very solid between the pipes again and TJ Constant was up to his old tricks with his name all over the score sheet. Again, Tyler Grove is a player that will excite fans with his speed and feisty playing style.

Ward-Cardinal controlled the offensive tempo very well once again from the back end and Nathan Bruyere had some quality chances as usual, he just needs to keep his howitzer of a shot below the knees and on target.

Here is how the scoring broke down:

1st period

OCN - Valiquette - Assist, Gray @ 6:03

Neepawa- Martin - Assist, Simpson @8:20

2nd period

OCN - TJ Constant - Assist, Baptiste @ 5:38

Neepawa - Daleboizk - Assist, Brooks @ 9:30

OCN -  Baptiste - Assist, TJ Constant @10:45

3rd period

OCN - Ward-Cardinal - Assist, Bruyere @ 1:25

Neepawa -  Lawrence - Assist, Switzer @ 2:15

Neepawa - Jacobson - Assist, Durdle @ 12:55

Overtime

OCN - Grove - Unassisted @ 1:59

Shots - 39 OCN - 24 Neepawa

The Blizzard made six cuts tonight bringing their roster down to 26. They will need to make one more cut by the beginning of the season.

An injury update on Mitchell Backhouse - he tore his ACL and will be out 3-6 months plus rehab. Having gone through the same injury myself I can tell you he's got a long road ahead of him. Also Wilson Dumais and Daniel Stagg were out tonight with the flu, no word on when they will be able to return.

Alex Henry and Brendan Dusik are expected to join the team on Monday as they have a funeral to attend this weekend for one of their hockey friends.

The Blizzard practice tomorrow before heading off to Nipawin on Saturday, it will be nice to see how what will essentially be the opening day roster performs as a unit throughout the rest of the exhibition season.

I will post the six cuts tomorrow morning as well as an interview with GM Derek Fontaine regarding cuts, camp, the upcoming season and more.

Have a good night.

A total of 33 players remain in camp. The Blizzard will trim the roster down to 25 tonight and play with their full team for the rest of the exhibition season, they might only cut down to 26 with the addition of Henry in nets just to see how things sort themselves out with the goaltenders.

The Blizzard management will most likely keep three goaltenders, seven defenders and fifteen forwards.

OCN takes on Neepawa tonight at 7:30 at the GLMC.

See you at the rink!

Blizzard Pickup a D and G from Neepawa

The OCN Blizzard and Neepawa Natives completed a trade this evening.

To OCN: D - Brendan Dusik (94) 6'4 210lbs from Oak Bluff, MB.
2011-2012 Stats: 0 G, 2A, 91PIM, 46 GP

                G- Alex Henry (94) 5'10 170lbs from Winnipeg, MB.
2011-2012 Stats: 2 W, 20 L, 28 GP, 4.57 GAA, .884 SV%

To Neepawa: List rights to Duncan Campbell and a 6th round draft pick.

OCN is hoping that Henry can come in and compete for the #1 spot with Justin McDonald. Mitchell Backhouse injured his knee practice today and trainer Cal Asham believes he will be out for an extended period of time. As for Dusik he'll slot right into that fifth slot on the blue line. A big physical defensemen who can and is willing to fight.

It's another move that adds some depth to what is already a deeper team than last season. Exciting time to be a Blizzard fan. The players are there, it's now up to the coaches to bring this group together.

Blizzard Lose To Nipawin 4-1 At Home

After a fan pleasing 4-3 come from behind win over the Flin Flon Bombers last night the OCN Blizzard couldn't pull together consecutive wins after falling 4-1 at home to the SJHL's Nipawin Hawks tonight. The Blizzard kept it close through the first 40 minutes but the wheels fell off in third... Assistant Coach Clay DeBray described it a little differently.

Here is how the scoring broke down.

1st period

Nipawin Goal - Bernard
Assist- O'Neill

OCN Goal - Cochrane
Assist -  Gray, Grove

2nd period

Nipawin Goal - Jensen
Assist - Martens, Doell

3rd period

Nipawin Goal -  Zerr
Assist - Bernard

Nipawin Goal - Lambert
Assist - O'Neill

Shots were 44-28 in favour of Nipawin.

The first two periods were very close, shots still favoured Nipawin heavily but the play was as close as the score indicated. Lots of physical play again from OCN including about 5-6 fights throughout the game. The Blizzard let about eight players go. I'll get that final cut list tomorrow.

Tonight was the first chance I had to see Garick Gray who returned from Kootenay Ice camp and Tyler Grove who finally reported from Selkirk in the Puska trade.

Grove can fly, he plays physical, isn't scared of anyone he'll slot in very well next to Gray on that second line. Blizzard fans already know what to expect from Gray.

The Blizzard top six is looking pretty good with TJ Constant, Dumais, Valiquette, Gray, Grove as the Blizzards building blocks on the top two offensive lines. Now they either need someone from camp to step into that final top six spot or acquire someone via trade.

The Blizz host Neepawa tomorrow night at 7:30 at the GLMC. There were probably another 350 fans in the stands tonight. Some good crowds for pre-season action.

I hope you Blizz fans are getting excited, this team is shaping up pretty nice.

OCN Blizzard 4 - Flin Flon Bombers 3

Sorry it took so long to get this up on here. I've been quite busy getting all settled in here in town!

Those of you who were at the game were treated to quite the spectacle. After the opening 15 minutes were dominated by Flin Flon the Blizzard began fighting back and it was some very entertaining physical -- with extra focus on the physical hockey by the Blizzard.

This is going to be a big team, they can skate, they can play and from what I saw in the just under 500 fans at the GLMC last night they'll enjoy the rough style of play. I think people in town are starting to get excited at the prospect of a very strong club this year.

Here is how yesterday's scoring broke down.

Wheldon - Goal, FF -PP, Unassisted
Robinson - Goal, FF - PP, Assist - Wheldon
Dumais - Goal, OCN, Assist -  TJ Constant, Ward-Cardinal
Robinson - Goal, FF - SH, Assist - McCaig, Litke
TJ Constant - Goal, OCN - PP, Assist - Elmes, Ward-Cardinal
Elmes - Goal, OCN - Assist - Ward-Cardinal
Cameron - Goal, OCN - Assist - Brady Constant, Cochrane

Both teams played 10 rookies and 10 veterans, OCN started their big four on the back end (Ward-Cardinal, Elmes, Bruyere, Cochrane)

Grant Valiquette really stood out yesterday, playing on a line with Dumais and Constant who both have WHL experience the youngster looked comfortable and impressive. I think you will see him in that slot for the start of the season on the top line. The kid has a good head, first back on defense, swift hands and is a great skater.

Wilson Dumais stood out as well, I'm pretty sure most Blizzard fans have heard of his wild days in the SJHL. He was calm last night, didn't take any penalties and stayed composed. He's a hell of a player but Mollard and DeBray will need to reign him in when he starts to get worked up.

Ward-Cardinal looked impressive again, not as dominant as in camp but that's to be expected with the higher caliber of play. He controlled the play when in possession of the puck and really dictated the flow of the offense quite well.

Camacho Lathin is a player I saw plenty of in NorMan before he came back to OCN to play Midget AA due to personal reasons. He was an offensive stud in midget, but has a very well rounded game which will allow him to hold down a roster spot on this team. He's a great skater, not big but players much larger than he is due to the good use of his body and puck protection skills. Very high hockey IQ on that kid. I hope OCN fans are excited to have a local kid of his caliber coming down the pipe.

Here is a post game interview with Head Coach Jim Mollard.

Not only did the Blizzard pick up a win yesterday but Tyler Grove reported from Selkirk and Garick Gray was cut from Kootenay and he will be returning to the Blizzard, both should be on the ice tonight versus Nipawin.

Puck drop is at 7:30 at the GLMC as the Blizzard play their second exhibition game of the season. Tickets are 5$ at the door.

See you at the rink,

Brad

Blizzard Main Camp Day 3

The OCN Blizzard held another day of drills and two 50 minute scrimmages on Thursday. I only made it to the first then went to dinner.

Here is how the scoring broke down in the third of four Blue vs White scrimmages.
